Eighty golfers puttered around in August and raised money for the Girard School District Foundation in the process. The foundation's inaugural golf tournament was held Friday, Aug. 5, at the Over Lake Golf Course in Girard. Twenty-foursomes competed in a four-person scramble, which garnered more than $7,500 for the foundation's capital campaign toward the Girard High School pool renovation efforts. Prizes were awarded for 18 different hole contests and a skins game. The team headed by Dick Holliday, a former Girard High School teacher and coach, won this year's event. Golfers on the winning team were Ronnie Rudler, Brad Miller and Mike Joseph. The runner-up team was captained by Luke Jackson and members included Matt Shepard, Jackson Hower and Mike Shepard.

Maple Donuts, JTM Foods, and The Main Street Cakery sponsored breakfast. Lunch was provided by Avonia Tavern and Mason Farms and beverages were provided by Allegheny Beverage. Mike and Larra Buie of L&M Notary donated course beverages and served them from their custom vintage trailer, BettyLou's Mobile Bar. Event corporate sponsors were: JPT Foundation, Dahlkemper Landscape & Maintenance, Pratt Insurance, Buseck, Barger, Bleil & Co. Inc., McDonald's, PNC Bank, First National Bank, Iszkula Orthodontics, Girard American Legion Post 494, HUB International and DeSantis Solutions.

The next golf event is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 4, 2023, at Over Lake Golf Course. The Girard School District Foundation is an independent, community non-profit organization founded in 2010 dedicated to sustaining and extending the excellence of the Girard public schools.
