WILLIAM MILLER
CLASS OF 1954

 

2012_miller_hsBill Miller graduated from Rice Avenue Union High School in 1954 and attended the University of Pittsburgh, graduating with a degree in pharmacy in 1958. He began working at the Girard Pharmacy as an intern in 1955 and purchased the store in 1970. In 2006, he sold the business and retired.

2012_miller_bill_currentBill was a founding member of the Northwest Jaycees and received the Young Man of the Year Award in 1963 and the Chamber of Commerce Award for community service in 1975. He and his wife were honored by the Exchange Club with the Book of Golden Deeds in 2001. When Bill was just out of college, Dr. Buckalew asked him to serve on the American Red Cross as assistant disaster chairman. They established an emergency field hospital at the high school. Bill served on the local board of the American Red Cross for 30 years. He also served on the Girard School Board for 18 years and was president of the board for the last class to graduate from Rice Avenue Union High and the first class to graduate from the new Girard High School.

Bill served on the Erie County School Authority and the tax commission. He also served on the Girard Borough Recreation Board at the time of the pool construction and the early years of its operation. He has served on the Girard Borough Zoning Hearing Board and the Water Wellhead Protection Committee.

Bill was an Eagle Scout with 12 years of scouting service. He also served on the Battles Village Board of Directors. He was president the first 10 years of the Methodist Church Day Care Center and continues to serve on the board. Bill has been the Mayor of Girard Borough since the year 2000. He is also a life member of the Masonic Lodge 347, The Erie Consistory, and the Zem Zem Temple. He is a life member of the Hazel Kibler Museum and is also a member of the Friends of the Library. Bill is also a member of the Exchange Club, now known as the Flags Civic Club, since 1971, and a member of the Girard-Lake City Chamber of Commerce, Erie County Koinonia and Sigma Chi.
