The Girard School District Foundation awarded three innovative grants in 2014-2015. The grants are designed to encourage faculty to develop and implement projects which will enhance and enrich educational programs and be a direct benefit to our students.
Congratulations to the following faculty and staff:
Spring 2015
Flagship Niagara League – Day Sail Program, Dave Koma (RAMS)
The Girard School District seventh grade U.S. History curriculum will be enhanced as the students set sail on the Flagship Niagara on October 9, 2015. This learning experience will allow the students to explore and analyze primary source materials related to the War of 1812 as well as the Battle of Lake Erie. Most interesting and unique for the students will be their participation in having a "hands-on" experience with sailing and serving as members of the crew, which will surely provide them a new perspective on history! Technology Additions in Physical Education, Scott Russell (GHS)
It is a goal of the Health and Physical Education program to provide the latest in health and fitness innovations to students. Scott Russell received funding to improve technology capabilities of the GHS HPE Dept. Through a grant from the Highmark Foundation in 2014, the HPE program was able to purchase new heart rate sensors. These sensors transmit data to an iPad providing the teacher a way to measure students' heart rate output during activities. Funding from The Girard School District Foundation will compliment this project through the purchase of a projector to display heart rates of students on the gym wall so students can monitor individual effort. This will hopefully promote student success and motivate them to put forth effort at a high level.
Fall 2014
Improving School Performance Conference, Donna Miller (EVES)
Recently, teachers from Elk Valley Elementary School were able to attend the annual Improving Schools' Performance Conference in Sheraton Station Square, Pittsburgh. The conference brought together teachers from across Pennsylvania who consistently strive to improve the learning and achievement of students. Teachers shared specific strategies that can help student learning and performance. Teachers are already implementing the excellent ideas they brought back from the conference.
