On December 27, 2013 about 165 runners entered the inaugural “Race to Remember” 5K run/walk held in Girard Borough. Each runner was asked if they would like to run/walk in memory of a departed loved one. The name of the loved one in whose memory they were running was printed on the back of the race t-shirts. The inspiration for this race was the passing of Gerald Miller in December of 2012. The Miller family wanted to do something for the community in remembrance of Gerry. Over the years Gerry had been involved with many of the non-profit agencies in Girard and had served on the Girard School Board. The Miller family is committed to physical fitness and decided a 5K race benefitting the Girard School District would be the best way to honor Gerry’s memory. All participant and volunteers celebrated together at the award banquet held immediately following the race at the Girard Legion.
