Barb began her career in public education teaching earth & space science at Girard High School, and then life science at Rice Avenue Middle School from 1979-1992. She is currently a program coordinator at Penn State Behrend’s Learning Resource Center, where she helps recruit, train, and supervise a team of 85 college students who work as peer tutors. These tutors provide academic support for their fellow students in over 125 courses.
Her first position at Behrend was in Continuing Education, developing a STEM Summer Institute for high school teachers; coordinating Math Options Career Day for middle school girls; and directing week-long Math Options summer day camps with an engineering and chemistry focus for girls in grades 8-10.
She also served as the director of the Penn State Educational Partnership Program (PEPP), which was a Behrend outreach program that partnered with the Erie School District to provide academic and social support to students who wanted to attend college, but had many obstacles to overcome in achieving this goal. In this job, Barb often collaborated with leadership of other Erie area non-profit organizations and school districts, and received specialized training in grant-writing, program evaluation, and volunteer coordination.
Barb graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a B.S. in biology education (1979), and earned her Masters of Public Administration from Penn State University (2017). Her MPA focus was on non-profit management—including program design and implementation, data analysis, and program evaluation. She has two adult children, Dan and Rachel, both of whom attended the General McLane schools and graduated from Penn State.
